Winter tire or over-tyre, why and when to equip yourself with one?

The winter season is upon us and with it, some requirements linked to the weather and the cold. Snowy, slippery, icy roads and low temperatures, your summer tires alone are no longer enough . The time has come to equip your vehicle correctly, but when, how and what to choose?

Don't wait to get stuck in the snow on your ski holiday route and, this year, get ahead of the curve for peaceful journeys in the face of winter conditions!

WHAT ARE WINTER TIRES?

Winter tires are tires specially designed for improve grip on the ground when temperatures drop , whether the ground is wet, icy or snowy.

When temperatures drop below 7°C, the rubber in summer tires hardens and causes a loss of grip and performance. Winter tires are more flexible and limit this risk.

WHEN TO INSTALL YOUR WINTER TIRES?

It is recommended to equip yourself with winter tires as soon as temperatures drop below 7°C . A good cue can be the time change. When we hit winter time, it's time to change your tires! In addition, from November 2021, legislation makes the use of winter tires compulsory in certain areas, as well as the use of appropriate equipment (snow chains or snow socks).

ADVANTAGES OF WINTER TIRES

Compared to summer tires, winter tires have a number of advantages.

  • better grip, mobility and traction on snowy and icy surfaces and in temperatures below 7°C;
  • reduced braking distance;
  • equipped with deep grooves and siping which reduce the risk of aquaplaning by evacuating water more easily.

DISADVANTAGES OF WINTER TIRES

Despite their advantages, winter tires also have their share of constraints and often require additional logistical costs (additional equipment, assembly):

  • certain regulated roads require additional equipment such as snow chains or extra tires;
  • need to change all 4 wheels of your car, preferably by a professional, which costs time and money. You also need to store your summer tires;
  • need to change them once winter has passed.

It is important to note that in some countries, snow tires or approved equipment are mandatory. Find out on a case-by-case basis since different European countries do not necessarily have the same regulations.
