Maralpins and Maralpines, find out what this new law will change for you from November 1st!
WHAT IS MOUNTAIN LAW?
The law for the modernization, development and protection of mountain territories, also called the Mountain 2 law, makes it compulsory to use special snow equipment to travel in certain areas of French territory from November 1 to March 31. Road users will then have to equip themselves with snow tires or removable anti-slip devices.
WHICH COMMUNITIES IN THE ALPES MARITIMES ARE CONCERNED BY THE MONTAGNE 2 LAW?
The Alpes Maritimes are one of the 48 departments affected by the new Mountain law. However, it only applies to 83 municipalities and not the entire department. To help you find your way, here is the list of municipalities affected by the Mountain law in the Alpes Maritimes department:
The new B58 sign indicating entry into the mandatory equipment zone during the winter period will very soon be placed in the departments concerned. A second sign, sign B59 , will indicate the exit from this mandatory equipment requirement.
WHAT EQUIPMENT WILL YOU NEED TO HAVE TO TRAVEL IN THE ALPES MARITIMES?
The Mountain law leaves several possibilities to users of the Alpes Maritimes. You will have the opportunity to equip yourself with:
- winter tires on all four wheels , 3PMSF certified (3 Peak Mountain Snow Flake),
- 4-season tires on all four wheels , also 3PMSF approved,
- at least one pair of snow chains on both drive wheels,
- or at least a pair of snow socks on both drive wheels.
You can also use M+S (Mud and Snow) certified tires but only until November 1, 2024, as this standard is not certified by independent tests.
WHAT IS THE RISK IN THE EVENT OF AN INFRINGEMENT?
In the event of non-compliance with the regulations, you risk a 4th class fine of €135. as well as the immobilization of the vehicle . It is therefore essential to have the right equipment according to your needs.
If you drive regularly or live in an area covered by the Mountain Law, it will undoubtedly be more judicious to turn to approved tires . Conversely, if you only ride occasionally in mountainous areas, removable non-slip equipment such as chains or snow socks will be more economical for you. In fact, the installation and cost of snow or season tires can be relatively high and must be done at a garage.
