How to measure the size of a tire?

In many cases, knowing your tire size is important. To do this, you must be able to decrypt the information on your equipment. This indication can be used in particular to install suitable snow chains, or to buy snow socks of the right size.

UNDERSTAND THE INDICATIONS ON YOUR TIRES

tire measurement index

Tire size is information given directly on these accessories, in the form of a series of numbers and letters. This alphanumeric set can be found on the sidewall of your tire. It indicates, in this order, the width of the tire, the height of the sidewall, the diameter of the rim, the type of material and the indices relating to the load and the speed.

The width of the tire is first given in millimeters, i.e. the distance between each sidewall. The sidewall height corresponds to the distance separating the blocks on the tread and the rim edge. This information is expressed as a percentage, to be calculated from the width provided previously.

Next is a letter, which can be either an R or a D. This is the structure of the tire, the R meaning “radial” and the D “diagonal”.

Most vehicles used by individuals are equipped with a radial structure. The size of the rim then appears, with a diameter given in inches. To calculate in centimeters, you need to know that 1 inch is equal to 2.54 cm.

Finally, two indices conclude this chain, firstly the load index, then the speed index. These data are recommendations to be followed carefully. They allow you to know the permitted load and the maximum speed for the vehicle using this type of tire.

INSTALLING SNOW CHAINS ON TIRES

The dimensions of a wheel are information to know in snowy weather if you wish to equip your tires with snow chains or snow socks.

In fact, all commercially available equipment can only be installed based on the size of your tires and the space allowed for the vehicle.

Whatever the brand of your car, the size indication is essential to be able to choose snow chains or snow socks compatible with your tire model.

The size of the links, in millimeters, is another essential piece of information in this area. 7 and 9 mm links are suitable for light vehicles, while semi-heavy vehicles will use 13 and 16 mm models. For heavy vehicles, 25mm links are required.

Despite everything, installing snow chains remains a complex and relatively impractical operation, especially for novices. Assembling and disassembling chains requires real know-how and patience. This solution can therefore prove tedious.
